Tiger Leaping Gorge

Shortly after returning from the U.S., Andrew and I left for an 11 day trip to southern China; where we visited Lijiang (1), Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-la (2), and Dali (3) in Yunnan province and Yangshuo county, near Guilin (4). It was a great trip. Although Andrew would say we spent too much time on the bus (about 18 hours in the first four days).

One of the highlights of the trip was a two day hike on the Tiger Leaping Gorge.  We really enjoyed the hike, me maybe a little bit more than Andrew. It took us about 7 hours to hike 23 km through an amazing gorge. The weather forecast was predicting a lot of rain, but fortunately it just drizzled a little. The rain was just enough to cool us off.

It took 5 hours, instead of 2, to drive from Lijiang to the start of the hike due to road construction and heavy traffic.

Andrew looking like he's having fun.

Five Finger Guesthouse, where we stayed one night.
Accommodations, dinner, breakfast and beer for $30, what a steal.
Our tiny room.
Trough toilet
Shower with hot water

Notice the waterfall covering our path.

Raging water at the bottom of the gorge.
After the 7 hour hike, it was another 2 hours round-trip to the bottom of the gorge.
We did not take the safe path.

We took this path, which was a very long metal ladder on the side of the mountain.

The views were breathtaking.
